Hand Carved Cherry Frame for a 55" TV
The Client was a photographer and set up a 55" High-Resolution flat TV screen to continuously display his photographs. He wanted a frame surrounding it that would have hand-made carvings of a natural theme. We designed the oak and acorn pattern, took some refresher carving classes, and implemented this design over several weeks. We roughed out the background using a router guided by hand with penciled markings, then did all the other carving using hand chisels.
Carving Details:
Chess Board
This chess board was made from quilted maple for the light squares, and jotoba for the dark squares, surrounded by a solid wenge rim with a cherry stripe. The back side is a decorative pattern built from cherry and western walnut with aspen stringing. The veneers were sliced in Vince's shop and sanded to 1/16 inch thickness.
Front side of the chess board
Decorative pattern on the back side. Notice that the successive slices of the cherry form a spiral.
Jewelry Box
Made from box-jointed cherry with a book-matched curly maple thick-veneer top. Handles, feet and inlay are made from rare desert ironwood.
Showing inside of the jewelry box with desert ironwood dividers and a moveable tray also containing desert ironwood dividers.
Xylophone Frame
Vince made the frame for this Xylophone for his son who is an accomplished percussionist. The frame is white oak and finished with oil and polyurethane. It is made to be disassembled and transported by car.
Fixtures for Karate School
Vince designed and built several fixtures for a Karate School in Beaverton Oregon run by 7th degree black-belt Paul Keller. He also installed custom red-oak baseboard and a rim around the mat area. All the fixtures are of red oak stained with a cherry stain. Not shown are the entry desk, the rack for batons, and a display case for karate achievement belts.
Statue Base
Vince made the custom base for the statue out of ebonized walnut with custom molding trim made from hard maple dyed to match the blue in the statue.
Pet Coffins
Vince has made many custom pet coffins for cats and dogs he has owned.
